Fear

The battle field over our subject is in our minds. Now there is a fear that we should have, one that honors and reverences a Holy God. I will close with that thought.  I want us to notice 4 things that fear can do you and me.

1.     F-forget the promises of God – When our minds are filled with fear we forget what the Lord God of heaven has promised us: Isa 43:1 But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called [thee] by thy name; thou [art] mine. Isa 44:8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared [it]? ye [are] even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, [there is] no God; I know not [any]. Rom 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. How quickly we forget what God has given us. He tells us not to fear. Why? He calls us by name- he knows me personally. He formed me. He knows me from the top of my head to the soul of my feet. He has given us a promise of Ownership, of becoming heirs to the throne, eternal life, comfort, peace that passes all understanding. The scriptures say in:  Gal 3:29 And if ye [be] Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Eph 3:6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:    1Jo 2:25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, [even] eternal life.

2.       E-erase the victories of the past, Why is it when we give into fear that we erase from our minds the victories that god has given us? The children of Israel did it, Elijah did it, David did it, Peter did it, Have you done it? Have you forgotten what the scripture says? Psa 98:1    O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvelous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory. 1Cr 15:54-55,57         So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where [is] thy sting? O grave, where [is] thy victory? But thanks [be] to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.   1Jo 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, [even] our faith.

3.      A-allows doubt to control the mind –  The word of God gives us instructions in Mark 11:23 on moving the mountains in our lives! Mar 11:23  For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. What causes a person to fall into sin? What takes them down a road of dead ends and failure? It is when that person begins to accept fear into their life and that fear takes over the  mind and the all strength is gone!!

4.      R-Removes any trust in the Holy Spirit. Trust. Trust has a twin sister and her name is obedience. You can’t have one without the other. When we accept fear we no longer trust that the Lord of heaven can do what He says he would do. We begin to trust in our flesh to make it through the day. We trust in men to guide us instead of the Holy Spirit. The book of Hosea tells us in 10:13 Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men.  Micah 7:5 says, Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. When we regard fear in our lives we remove that bond of trust in the Holy Spirit. Why can’t we say as in Psa 18:2      The LORD [is] my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, [and] my high tower.

Psa 18:30             [As for] God, his way [is] perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he [is] a buckler to all those that trust in him.

Psa 20:7               Some [trust] in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

Psa 25:2               O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.

Psa 25:20             O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.

Psa 56:3               What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

Psa 64:10             The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.

Psa 71:1               In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.

Psa 71:5               For thou [art] my hope, O Lord GOD: [thou art] my trust from my youth.

Psa 73:28     But [it is] good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.

Fear. F-forget the promises of God, E-erase the victories of the past, A-allows doubt to control the mind, R-Removes any trust in the Holy Spirit.

Isa 41:10-13 Fear thou not; for I [am] with thee: be not dismayed; for I [am] thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish. Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, [even] them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought. For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.
Our text tells us that he, God, has not given us the spirit of fear, so why then does it plague the hearts and minds of so many of God’s people? May I leave you with a familiar verse that has a great promise to us?

Pro 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.     In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

When we trust in the Lord with every ounce of our being and we do not rely on humanistic thinking, and whatever we do in our everyday lives we can acknowledge Him and He will give us the direction for our lives. So, do not let FEAR dictate your walk with the Lord today or for the rest of your life for that matter!
