America has developed a new appreciation for “First Responders” since the attacks on the Towers and Pentagon in 2001. These loyal fire fighters, medical personnel, and others rushed to help bring men and women to safety. Some died, but all responders have been honored by a grateful nation.
Recently our family had a medical emergency. There were problems, and good doctors were not sure of the cause. Our first response was to go to the Scriptures. There we found Proverbs 18:10, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” We had great concern, but we were not running in fear. We were running into safety for ourselves and our loved one. My wife and I received peace from the truth of God’s ever caring presence.
The next day we were blessed through this same verse. We found the verse was part of our daily devotions. This was our Father’s way of meeting our need. The discovery of the verse was “the cake,” and the next day God put the “icing” on the cake. God does all things well!
In Psalm 18:2 the Lord is referred to as my rock, fortress, deliverer, God, strength, buckler, horn, and lastly “my tower.” All these words speak of physical safety and more. The word “tower” in Proverbs 18:10 embodies all the above words and more. This tower is a place of safety, peace, instruction, faith and assurance for the righteous believer.
So as we honor “First Responders” for their work. Why not honor God and let your “First Response” be to run to God and let Him be your Tower?
