Good Affliction

untitled“It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.”

Psalm 119:71

How can affliction be good for me?

Problems and sufferings can come in many forms, and every person can be affected in different ways. However, the Lord uses affliction to teach us that we need to rely on Him for the solutions. God’s Word is the Statutes we must learn.

How often I read my Bible without the desire I should have. A difficult life decision needs to be made; then I begin pouring over my Bible. The affliction that came was good to help me see my need to passionately read my Bible. God’s Statute learned: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”  Psalm 119:11

How often I let my prayer life digress until a need or problem arises; then I find myself whispering a prayer in every breath. The affliction that came was good to help me see my need to pray to God more fervently. God’s Statute learned: “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6

God wants us in fellowship with Him! Often God uses difficulties in our lives so we can see how much we need Him! Every time the Lord brings affliction into our lives, He is teaching us and preparing us for a future time when we must trust Him more.

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed;

we are perplexed, but not in despair;

Persecuted, but not forsaken;

cast down, but not destroyed;

“For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish,

yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

For our light affliction, which is but for a moment,

worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;”

(II Corinthians 4:8-9, 16-17)
