Food for Thought

imagesCYAG8Y00While vacationing with friends recently, our search for a restaurant took us to one called “Food For Thought.” The restaurant is located in Williamsburg, Virginia, and the food is good. There are small 3×5 cards (“Food for Talk”) on each table with ideas or thoughts on them. Thus the mind can be challenged as you await your meal, and we did discuss some of the thoughts that we read. We all came away satisfied with the food and the unique practice of feeding the mind as well.

A believer cannot eat there without thinking of spiritual food for thought. The “physical body” must be fed. We did that when the food came. The spiritual person must also be fed. We do that through the Word. Depravation of either food or the Word leaves one weak and vulnerable. Let’s look at some “Spiritual Food for Thought.” God’s Book, the Bible, becomes our source of nourishment for the day. Be strong in the Lord.

I want to give you four words with accompanying verses with the hope that it will be “Food for Thought” for your day. The words are Assurance, Peace, Joy, and Success. It is imperative to have Assurance of your salvation. Let this truth be “Food for Spiritual thought.” 1 John 5:11-13, “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

With assurance we move to the word Peace. Peace is a blessing especially in the time of storm. Psalm 119:165, “Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.;” John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid

What a unique blessing to have the Joy of the Lord! John wrote in 1 John 1:4, “And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.” He assured the believers that he had heard, seen, and handled the Word of Life (Jesus). In verse 3, he was declaring all these things that your joy may be full. “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”

Lastly, let’s talk about being Successful in the unsuccessful world. Joshua 1:8-9, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

One of the cards in the group of “Food for Talk” had these thoughts on the definition of Success:

“Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.”

–John Wooden (1910-2010) 40 year high school and college basketball coach, 10 National Championships UCLA Basketball

Share your definition of success. Are you doing everything you can to become the best of which you are capable?

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” — Isaiah 55:8-9
