As we commence another presidential-election year, people are debating who will be the next Commander in Chief. The US President is the most influential leader in the world. These political considerations are important; however, this person will only have this position for four or eight years. But there is a political consideration of immensely greater importance. Let us see what the Ruler of the universe has to say about His Kingdom.
The Father promised to establish a terrestrial kingdom and give it to his Son. (Psalm 2:6-12, Daniel 7:13-14, Isaiah 9:6-7, Zech 9:9, Luke 1:33, Mat 20:21, Mat 25:34). Although the prophets did not have a full understanding of the Messiah (1 Peter 1:10-11), the Israelites were without excuse (John 5:39-47, Rom 3:1-4, John 3:18) for not expecting a Savior, their Messiah, their Deliverer, their King as was clearly foretold would come (Isa 9:6-7, Mic 5:2, Acts 26:22). In fact, the Scriptures give an interesting portrayal of the coming Savior as the eternal King Who will be of the dynasty of King David and will be his descendent (2 Sam 7:16-29, Psa 89:3-37, Isa 9:6-7, Jer 3:5, 10:10, Mat 21:4-11, 15, Mark 11:9-10, Luke 19:38, John 12:13-15.)
When Jesus Christ and His disciples preached the Gospel of the Kingdom of God from Heaven (Mark 1:14, 15, Mat 3:2, Mat 4:17, 23, 9:35, Luke 4:43, 8:1, 9:1-2,11, Mat 10:1-7, Luke 10:1, 9, 11), they were not telling people to join a spiritual kingdom but to accept the physical Kingdom that had been prophesied by the prophets for centuries. They were basically saying, “Good news, everybody! The long-awaited Messiah has come! The prophecies of the prophets have all been fulfilled! We don’t have to wait anymore! Jesus of Nazareth is God in human flesh! The promised Eternal King has come! He is HERE!”
Jesus Christ’s Kingship was not only prophesied. It was proclaimed by the world around Him :
- the Angel Gabriel before His birth: “…and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” (Luke 1:33)
- scholars of the East: “Where is he that is born King of the Jews?” (Mat 2:2)
- the Roman Governor Pilate at His crucifixion: (Luke 23:38, John 19:14-22)
- “Behold your King.”
- “Shall I crucify your King?”
- “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” (in the three commonly spoken languages)
- “What I have written I have written”
Since His Kingdom was rejected (John 1:11), the Kingdom was postponed. (Acts 1:6,11)
BUT…He has promised to someday return to fulfill the prophecies and establish a Kingdom and reign on the earth when He receives the Kingdom from His Father (the Ancient of Days as prophesied in Dan 7:9-14) for 1000 years, Rev. 20:2-7. When he returns, He will come with an army of saints on horses and will have written on His side, “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” (Rev 17:14, 19: 14-16) He also will create a new heaven and new earth and will reign as eternal King in an eternal Kingdom, (2 Peter 1:11, Rev. 11:15, 12:5)
The Kingship of Christ is something to be excited about!
