I once heard a radio Preacher say, ”Don’t build your life on the foundation of the culture of the world, but build your life on the foundation of the Word of God.” His words caused me to think of our culture and how millions of Americans are directed by the culture. Their culture instead of the Bible dictates their many choices in life. Choices in music, their schedule, their values, what they read, their vocabulary, diet, what they wear, what they do on Sunday, and many more activities of life controlled by the current cultural values. The modern American is seeking truth, reality, and fulfillment in a culture that has a foundation of shifting sand. Let’s get a grip on things by looking at the “sure foundation.”
Luke 6:47-49: 47”Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.”
Jesus uses a man with a good foundation as an example of a person who will be able to handle the “violence” of his culture. Life in this century can be stable if founded upon the true foundation, the Scriptures. You can live in an unfriendly culture and face the many floods of ungodliness and survive. You can face it all because you have a biblical foundation. So many are not listening and consequently the culture will blow them all over the place.
One can make the case that not all of our culture is stormy. I can whole-heartedly agree with that statement. Much of the time it is just the excess of involvement. Let me use an example of a social or athletic involvement that causes you to miss Church. It wasn’t that way when you joined but now it is, so God is moved to second place. The dominance of our secular culture pushes family time, and many other good things aside. Many of our lives and our homes are built on an unsure foundation.
In 1 Cor. 3:10-11, the word foundation is used. 10 “According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. 11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
The word means something put down or a substructure on which to build. That would be the Bible. There is no shakiness here. This house will last through all the storms. We are asked in Ps. 11:3, what can we (the righteous) do if the foundations be destroyed? Here the word, foundation means, a basis, moral or political support, purpose. Can you see how we need both? Let’s be rooted and built up in Him and established in the Faith.
Eph. 2:7-9-7 “That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
